“Design, build, prototype, and develop a visual translation machine.“

This project explores translation beyond language, through play, drawing, and cultural symbolism. I designed YourTurn, inspired by the traditional Korean board game Yutnori (윷놀이), and reimagined it as a hybrid learning and artistic tool. The game reinterprets the essence of Yutnori by blending gameplay with learning the Korean alphabet and abstract drawing.

“디자인하고, 만들고, 프로토타입을 거쳐 시각적 번역 기계를 개발하라”는 과제를 바탕으로, 나는 번역을 단순히 언어간 번역이 아닌 놀이, 미술, 문화를 통한 창의적인 행위로 탐구했다. 이 프로젝트에서는 한국의 전통 윷놀이를 재해석한 보드게임 YourTurn을 디자인했다. 참가자는 윷놀이를 하며 한글을 써 보고 전통 문양을 그리는 활동을 함으로써 한국 문화를 색다르고 재미있게 체험할 수 있다. 윷판은 천에 인쇄되었고, 윷은 종이와 골판지로 제작되었다. 설명서는 전통 제본 방식인 선장(線裝) 기법으로 엮었다.





• Book

The book documents the game as a translation machine and provides additional insights into Yutnori, its history, and Hangul. It is bound using Seonjang (선장), a traditional Korean method that emphasizes its cultural context.

Players take turns throwing sticks, moving tokens, and drawing Korean letters and traditional shapes, creating an engaging, hands-on way to explore Korean culture and language through play.
